constitutional Hydrotherapy

History
Constitutional hydrotherapy was developed in the early 1900s by Dr. Otis G. Carroll, a naturopathic physician in Spokane, Washington. Inspired by traditional European water-based therapies, Dr. Carroll created a structured treatment using alternating hot and cold towel applications—sometimes with gentle sine-wave electrical stimulation—to strengthen the body’s natural vitality and healing capacity.

Benefits
This gentle therapy works to:

  • Stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation, improving detoxification and oxygen delivery to tissues.

  • Enhance immune system activity and resilience.

  • Support digestive function and metabolism.

  • Promote deep relaxation, balancing the nervous system and restoring energy.

What to Expect
During a session, warm and cool towel applications are placed on the torso in a specific sequence, sometimes accompanied by mild electrical stimulation. These alternating temperatures encourage improved circulation, detoxification, and healing responses throughout the body. The treatment is safe, non-invasive, and deeply restorative.

Conditions Commonly Supported

  • Chronic fatigue and low energy

  • Frequent infections, poor immune function

  • Digestive complaints (IBS, sluggish digestion, constipation)

  • Cardiovascular and circulatory issues

  • Hormonal imbalance or menstrual discomfort

  • Stress, anxiety, and nervous system exhaustion

  • Chronic pain or inflammation (arthritis, fibromyalgia, injury recovery)

Constitutional hydrotherapy is generally safe, but may not be appropriate for:
